Seventeen | Male | District Nine
My eyes dart back and forth across a page in my book taking in the words as I dive into another world. I can almost see the fairytale creatures coming to life, but it's all ruined the moment the door opens. My sister slips through, and I can tell she's wanting to do something. It's dangerous for her to slip out in the middle of the night, and mom and dad never approve. But I guess that's where I come in. I've always watched her back because she's my sister, and I love her dearly. And I don't want her to get in trouble, but sometimes I fear hiding her from my parents will backfire on me. Folding down the corner of the page, I stand up allowing myself to take her in. I hate that she does this, but I'll always respect her wishes. "Don't stay out too late, and be safe, and be home before mom and dad wake up, and I'll see you tonight." I have to keep an eye on her. To make sure she stays safe. "This is why you're my favorite." She wraps me in a warm embrace, and I allow a smile to spread across my face. But I really hate that she does this. We're our own people though. "But don't worry! I won't be out too late, dont wanna keep you up waiting dad..." I'm definitely not her father, but I know she's joking, and I hope she understands why I worry. "Love you." Then she skips off. "I'll be on the porch waiting." I call out after her hoping she hears. Walking back inside, I grab my book, and I sit down in a chair where I'll wait for her return. But I'm the meantime, I place my nose back in my book, and I begin reading some more. I'm about a page or two away from finishing when the lights go out. I can hear footsteps approaching quickly - "Rainbow?" I ask quietly before standing up. Something hits me hard - This isn't my sister. I'm on the ground, and they're shackling my hands. "Rainbow this better not be a sick joke." Each breath catches in the back of my throat. "Rain-" Something is placed in my mouth, and I can't even speak, and then the darkness grows darker. I'll never get to finish my story. |
