The 47th Maze Running Reaping

    The day was just dawning when our train finally filed into the station. Upon departure we are ushered into cars and watch as an entire District awakens to the most important day of the year. Some are shedding tears while others are rushing through the streets with excitement staining their skin. A smile spurs across my face as I follow the figures with my eyes, I love this job. A scream, a shout, footsteps running away or towards the sight of our caravan. The Capitol was here to select the next shining star of Panem, Ceasar was undoubtedly preparing to start the show in his studios. Today is going to be a glorious day. 

    Midday soon shines over the skin of hundreds of children glancing at me to discover their destiny. I smile in the light of the sun, "Welcome, Welcome to the annual Reaping. Today we will select two brave souls to travel to the heart of our nation and compete for a chance at unlimited riches and glory. Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor!" Silence stirs me to my place by the first bowl, would there be any volunteers today? Time to find out who will be my Runners. 

    "Ladies first," My fingers fall and furl around a single slip of paper before pulling it from its place. I pause for a moment of adrenaline induced anticipation and read the first name allowed with a sweet smile. "Laia Alexandrite!" I waste no time watching her walk from her place in the crowd. I soon select the slip of my second contender, "Alexzander Thomas!"

The mazes always seem to interest me, and yet here I am gathered in the district square praying my name isn't called. Dying just doesn't seem fun, but people die all the time. I feel this year is going to become worse than all the other years. Many victors have been allowed, and now I like none of that even matters. It's going to crash and burn, and the idea of many winning will slowly die away.

All I want is to go home after the selection ceremony and take a nap.

I do this every year. Every single chance that I get. Napping makes the world a better place. It makes it worth living in.

But I hear my name bellowing through the square -

What kind of crap is this?

A heavy sigh leaves my chest as I make my way towards the stage. These people are going to regret messing with my nap, but maybe I can take a nap on the train there. Yeah. That's what I'll do. Because I know that nobody will care enough to save me. Mom and dad just glare at me. My brother and sister just stand in awe.

Why not save the one they love?

Do they even care that I'm going to die?

A sall burst of laughter leaves my lips as I take my place on the stage. This is the beginning, and I'm ready to destroy anyone standing in my way. Being a career has its perks, and I'm ready to show the world exactly what I'm made of. At least I won't die in the bloodbath like the one did last year.

The day is special, though the start is no different then any other. Before the Rays of the Sun even scarcely begin to lick across the land, preparation of this Morning is already conquered. Flexible attire clothes my skin, and I’m one of the few who venture to the career center on such a date. But not a single day may permit an absence of training, and today especially, as my Father persists. All of us Thomas’s intimidate the slim company within the vast room, prepared to demolish upcoming sparring opponents. At least on such a morning the Trainers entertain us with the event of competitions for us Careers. And to no surprise, I’m first to be called to the mats.

A wooden sword is meant for pure practice; though mine engulfs bruises upon my match. She ignites just as many future purple tints across my exterior. But within the end I’m claimed victorious with a mere more points. Not even my older Siblings illuminate such tournament against their rivals. However I do not share bad blood with my frequent spar partner. Bored smirks are exchanged between us two, knowing quite well not even the elders evoke such a show that we can.

“Rematch later?” I offer her, when we’re allowed to disperse from the performances. A nod answers me, if only I knew of what was to about to occur.

An alluring outfit accompanies my appearance next, as I wait amongst the other fourteen year old boys. This year does not excite me. Father declared I must await at least two more before offering up my soul to destiny. Though he never instructed me on how to handle what’s about to unravel, leaving the decisions finally up to myself.

Pride spreads my lips into a wide grin as my name echoes amongst the crowd. Confidence carves each of my steps across the pavement. Father had not ordered me to give-up such a calling if this were to happen, and surely I shall not. As if a celebrity gracing an audience with my presence, I smile to them with assuring eye contact to all who my view falls upon. It’s prematurely time to shine in my glory, but I sure as hell am ready.

“Are all of you ready for a damn good show?” I question with a boasting tone. This couldn’t get any better.
