Lail paced the mazemaker quarters, eyes darting back and forth from one computer screen to the next. A huge grin spread across his face. The young runners were slowly slipping away into the ranks of the deceased, and it meant the world to him, yet he never said a word. The remaining few needed to die before this project turned into the best moment ever.
Was it wrong killing children for a living? Maybe.
Did Lail care?
No, not at all.
It was all apart of his job, and today they were getting closer to one last step. The final hall was slowly drifting near, and Lail wanted to make sure none of the younger runners saw it.
He twirled the microphone in his hand preparing to startle all the runners awake because big news was at hand, but he wanted to wait until exactly the right time. The clock hadn't struck midnight yet, but once it reached that hour, Lail would make sure everyone was awake and prepared for a fight to the death.
Counting to himself, he let out a loud huff when the clock changed over to the following day. The mazemaker turned to his sister as the smile grew even larger;
"Good morning runners!" He shouted into the mic as loud as he possibly could, and then he waited for them all to stir. One by one the monitors in the room began beeping to life as vitals began climbing past that of the sleeping stage. "I said, Good morning runners!" Once more he shouted as loud as possible before prancing around the room.
"Now that you're all awake, I have urgent news. We have decided to host a very special feast for you all. I know how rough the day was for you, and we wanted to make it even better." He paused wondering if anyone would even catch on to the sarcasm laced in his voice while mentioning the previous day. "You're all invited to it, and you better show up. If you don't show up, you'll suffer the most painful death ever imaginable, and I personally will make sure of that."
The mic turned off it slid from his hand landing on the ground before him. Lail turned to all the other mazemakers working the computers; "They have 30 minutes max to make it. If they don't show up, fry them because I want to hear them scream."
Welcome, runners, to the feast.
As runners look around the graveyard, they will notice names of past runners from different mazes along with dead runners from the current maze etched into the tombstones. It offers an eerily quiet feeling as the howling wind tears through the night sky. Nothing offers any kind of relief as the bitter chills grow colder.
Snow falls fast occluding the vision of those gathered around. It's colder than it has ever been before.
In the very center of the graveyard, runners can see a few items stacked in a pile. Perhaps it's something one needs in order to survive the rest of the maze, or maybe it's just an illusion brought on by the mazemakers. The only way to tell is to get close enough.
2 runners have to die before anyone can flee the feast.
Good luck, runners, and remember to have fun.
